JDRF is the only global organization with a strategic plan to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people’s lives until it is no longer a threat to anyone
The Long Island Chapter of JDRF was founded in 1975 by volunteers who were parents of children with diabetes. The original office was located in the rear of the Port Washington Thrift Shop; the office is now on Route 110 (Broadhollow Road) in Melville. The chapter was run totally by volunteers until 1990, when the first professional staff was hired.
The Long Island Chapter has been one of the fastest growing chapters in JDRF. Reaching more than $3 million in revenue in fiscal year 2008, the chapter ended its sixth consecutive year above the $2 million mark.
The Walk to Cure Diabetes is one of the largest walks on Long Island. This year, more than 10,000 walkers have raised over $1 million so far! The 2013 Golf Classic was once again a sell out, and added another $150,000 to the funds raised for diabetes research! And, new for 2013, the first annual Gourmet Tastings for a Cure event was a large success, raising another $75,000 for T1D research!
